Fargo, 2011
from the Fargo Birds series
goauche and ink on gessoed cardboard
I'm currently packing up a Fargo Bird painting to ship to Minneapolis — from Boston. It's for a group exhibition called "Home" at Altered Aesthetics gallery in Northeast Minneapolis, opening in September. This painting is especially sweet for me, as it's the first of a series of paintings (gouache & ink on gessoed cardboard) where I mapped my location of Mound, MN in relation to cities and towns I'd heard of when living back East. Being in Minnesota for a few months this spring & summer, gave me new perspective, which I had hoped it would. Not only the experience of getting to know a new city (GREAT city, by the way), saturate myself with incredible nature, and meet good new people (shout out to Fallon and downtown Mound!), I got a chance to demystify exotic upper Midwest places. Most turned out to be several hours away and I had so much at my doorstep to explore and so little time in the area, I opted to stay local instead. So maybe I re-mystified these locations, by knowing I was close enough to reach them in a few hours, but didn't, leaving them mysterious. Those places include Duluth, Sioux City & Sioux Falls, New Germany, Savage, Chippewa Falls, and others, twelve in total.
Here goes Fargo!
